Background:
The Mayans developed a great civilization in Central America (300 A.D. - 900 A.D.). Probably originating in Guatemala, the Mayans spread into the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) , where their civilization reached its height . The Mayans created an advanced civilization that was in full bloom by 300 A.D.
Although the Mayans borrowed ideas from earlier peoples of Middle America, they created a distinctive culture and were great innovators. Exceptional scientists, astronomers, and mathematicians, the Mayans developed the world's most accurate calendar, scientific farming techniques, and an elaborate religious society. They were also architects and sculptors and their fine artists excelled in the arts of jewelry making and weaving.
The Mayan urban masterpiece was Tikal, a city of nearly 100,000, a population far greater than any European city at that time. Quiche and other Mayan languages are still spoken today. Mayan influence remains strong in traditional songs and fabric designs.
